Artists have portfolios. Sales reps have new client packets. Writers should have sample kits.

Also known as press kits, these packets of information are a great way to give new clients and prospects a snapshot of yourself and your writing services.

Websites are great, and certainly a valuable tool in your marketing toolbelt. But have other tools available, as well. After a potential client has browsed your website, they may be ready to talk. This is where a sample kit comes in.

Some website platforms do not allow certain types of files to be uploaded. It’s a good idea to keep hard copies of these troublesome files on hand, especially if they are unique products that show your range as a writer.

There’s no hard and fast rule about what a sample kit should include. All you need is a basic 2-pocket folder in which to store your materials. My suggestions for what to include would be:

· Copy of your writers’ C.V. and where some of your bylines have appeared

· Hard copy printouts of recent articles*

· Business card or contact information readily available and visible

*It’s always good to include relevant pieces. For instance, if you are speaking to a pet store owner about doing some blogging, bring along any writing samples that relate to owning or operating a pet store, pet ownership, or general pet care. The client appreciates knowing a writer has existing knowledge of their industry.

Give the potential client the kit so they can review it at their convenience. Encourage them to contact you if they have any questions about your samples, would like to see other samples of your work, or if they are interested in getting a quote for a project.

A small gesture like providing a potential client with a neat, orderly sample kit speaks volumes about your work style. It shows you are prepared, experienced, and up to the task of handling their writing needs.

Do you use sample kits? If so, what do you usually give to potential clients? If not, why?
